Koelreuteria Paniculata / Sapindus chinensis, Popularly refered to as goldenrain tree, pride of India, China tree or varnish tree, this flowering plant with origins in China, Korea and Japan is part of the Sapindaceae family. It is a small to medium-sized tree, growing to 7-12m tall, displaying a sheric shape. Slow in growth, its main botanic interest lies in its attracive blossoming occurring in different seasons. It keeps its fruit until well after having dropped all its foliage. Planted in isolated settings or along walkways, it enjoys shadowy placements. Its ornamental fame is due to its blossoms, fruits and the colourful changes its foliage undergoes in autumn. Tolerant to dry conditions, it does not adapt well to excessive humidity. Never to be trimmed, one should avoid exposure to strong winds.
