Phoenix Canariensis, Commonly known as Canary Island Date Palm or pineapple pine, this tree belongs to the Arecaceae (earlier known as Palmaceae) and is obviously native to the Canary Islands. Its beauty lies most of all in its posture, foliage and the colour of its fruition. It is one of the most widely grown palm trees worldwide. Reaching heights of aprox. 20m, it develops a trunk of up to one metre in diametre. Slow in growth, it is appreciated for its fruits (dates) and honey. Date palms are a highly elegant option to be planted in rows along main avenues and boulevards. With its resilience it can face temperatures as low as -8 C° without great problems, even though it flourishes best in moderate climate conditions. Deals well with drought spells, requiring moderate watering.
