Chamaerops Humilis. Palmito o Palma Enana.
Chamaerops Humilis, Known as Mediterranean fan palm, it belongs to the Arecaceae (earlier known as Palmaceae) and is native to the mediterranean region. Its name meaning “modest bush”, it is widespread in arid regions near the coastline of northern Africa, southern Italy, Spain and the mediterranean islands. It is one of Europe’s native palm trees, being one of the most representative symbols of mediterranean vegetation. It offers a bush-like appearance, not surpassing two metres in height. Slow in growth, its core is soft and edible, while its leaves are used in the production of baskets and even broomsticks. It is frequently planted in parks and other urban spaces, but also in gardens and as a decorative element on terraces. Adapting well to more shadowy settings, it resists well against colder temperatures, despite prefering moderate or hot climate conditions. It deals well with strong winds and the sea’s saltiness.
