Quercus suber , Popularly known as cork oak, this species belonging to the Fagaceae is endemic to the western Mediterranean. Tall in size, it reaches heights of aprox. 25m. Its trunk is covered with a very thick bark which is processed into cork. It flourishes best on siliceous soil. Requiring intense sunlight, it is resistant to heatwaves, even though it does not prosper on excessively dry grounds. It is a tree which does not deal well with cold temperatures. It stands out for its cork, acorns, the strength of its timber and its high ornamental value.
